Sigmund Jähn is a German cosmonaut and former fighter pilot in the East German Air Force. He was the first German citizen to fly in space, aboard the Soviet Soyuz 31 mission in 1978. He was also the first German to perform a spacewalk. Jähn was born in Morgenröthe-Rautenkranz, Vogtland, Germany. He studied at the German Air Force Academy and graduated in 1959. He then served as a fighter pilot in the East German Air Force until 1965. In 1965, Jähn was selected to join the Soviet Union's Intercosmos program, which allowed citizens of other countries to fly in space. He trained at the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center in Star City, Russia, and was selected to fly on the Soyuz 31 mission in 1978. Jähn spent seven days in space, during which he conducted experiments and performed a spacewalk. He returned to Earth on August 26, 1978, and was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union. Jähn retired from the East German Air Force in 1990 and became a professor at the German Aerospace Center. He has also served as a consultant for the European Space Agency and the German Space Agency. Jähn is married and has two children. He is an honorary citizen of his hometown, Morgenröthe-Rautenkranz, and has been awarded numerous honors, including the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.
