Shirley Walker was an American composer, conductor, and orchestrator of film, television, and video game scores. She was the first female composer to score a major studio animated feature film, Warner Bros.’ Batman: Mask of the Phantasm (1993). She was also the first female composer to score a major studio live-action feature film, Warner Bros.’ The Flash (1990). Walker composed the scores for over 100 films, television series, and video games, including the Emmy-winning score for the television series Picket Fences (1992–1996). She was nominated for an Emmy Award for her work on the television series The New Batman/Superman Adventures (1997–2000). Walker was a pioneer in the field of electronic music, and was the first composer to use a computer to compose a score for a major studio film, Warner Bros.’ The Lost Boys (1987). She was also the first composer to use a computer to compose a score for a major studio television series, CBS’s Walker, Texas Ranger (1993–2001). Walker was a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, and the Society of Composers and Lyricists. She was also a member of the American Society of Music Arrangers and Composers. Walker died on November 30, 2006, at the age of 61, in Los Angeles, California.
