Sergio Aragonés is a Spanish-born cartoonist, writer, and editor best known for his contributions to Mad magazine. He is the creator of the comic book series Groo the Wanderer, and has won numerous awards for his work, including the National Cartoonists Society's Reuben Award for Outstanding Cartoonist of the Year in 2001. Aragonés was born in Castellon, Spain, on September 6, 1937. He moved to Mexico with his family at the age of seven, and then to the United States in 1955. He attended the School of Visual Arts in New York City, where he studied cartooning and illustration. Aragonés began his career in the early 1960s, working as an assistant to cartoonist Jack Davis on the comic book Tales from the Crypt. He then began contributing to Mad magazine, where he is best known for his "marginals" – small cartoons that appear in the margins of the magazine. He has also written and illustrated comic books, including Groo the Wanderer, which he created in 1982. Aragonés has won numerous awards for his work, including the National Cartoonists Society's Reuben Award for Outstanding Cartoonist of the Year in 2001.
