Sam Tanenhaus is an American writer and editor. He was born on October 31, 1955 in New York City. He is best known for his work as the editor of The New York Times Book Review from 2004 to 2013. Tanenhaus graduated from Yale University in 1977 with a degree in English. He then went on to earn a master's degree in English from the University of Virginia in 1979. Tanenhaus began his career as a freelance writer and editor for various publications, including The New Republic, The New York Times Magazine, and The Wall Street Journal. In 2004, he was appointed editor of The New York Times Book Review, a position he held until 2013. Tanenhaus has written several books, including The Death of Conservatism (2009), The Death of Liberalism (2012), and Whittaker Chambers: A Biography (1997). He has also written for The New Yorker, The Atlantic, and The New York Review of Books. Tanenhaus is currently a contributing editor at Vanity Fair and a senior fellow at the New America Foundation.
