Salim Akil is an American television and film producer, director, and writer. He is best known for his work on the television series Girlfriends, The Game, Being Mary Jane, and Black Lightning. He has also directed several feature films, including Jumping the Broom and Sparkle. Akil was born on June 22, 1964 in Oakland, California. He attended the University of California, Los Angeles, where he earned a degree in theater arts. Akil began his career in television in the late 1990s, writing and producing for the series Moesha and The Jamie Foxx Show. He went on to create and executive produce the UPN/CW sitcom Girlfriends, which ran for eight seasons. He also created and executive produced the CW series The Game, which ran for nine seasons. In 2013, Akil directed his first feature film, Jumping the Broom, which starred Angela Bassett and Paula Patton. He followed this up with the 2012 remake of Sparkle, starring Jordin Sparks and Whitney Houston. In 2018, Akil created and executive produced the BET series Being Mary Jane, starring Gabrielle Union. He also created and executive produced the CW series Black Lightning, which ran for four seasons. As of 2021, Salim Akil's net worth is estimated to be roughly $10 million.
