Ruth Aitken began her netball career in the late 1970s, playing for the Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic in the National Bank Cup. She was a member of the New Zealand national team from 1979 to 1984, and was part of the team that won the 1983 World Netball Championships. Ruth Aitken has also had a successful coaching career. She was the head coach of the New Zealand national team from 1997 to 2007, leading them to victory at the 1999 and 2003 World Netball Championships. She was also the head coach of the Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic from 2008 to 2011. Ruth Aitken is currently the head coach of the New Zealand U21 team.
