Russell Crotty is an American artist who was born in 1956 in Los Angeles, California. He is best known for his large-scale drawings and installations that explore the relationship between art and astronomy. He has exhibited his work in numerous solo and group exhibitions in the United States and abroad. Crotty received his BFA from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 1979 and his MFA from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1983. He has taught at the University of California, Los Angeles, the University of California, Santa Barbara, and the Otis College of Art and Design. Crotty's work has been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions, including at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; and the Museum of Modern Art, New York. He has also been included in the Venice Biennale, the Whitney Biennial, and the Carnegie International. Crotty is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Guggenheim Fellowship, the National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, and the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant. Crotty currently lives and works in Los Angeles, California.
