Russell Baker is an American writer, humorist, and journalist who won the Pulitzer Prize for his autobiography Growing Up. He was born on August 14, 1925 in Loudoun County, Virginia. He attended Johns Hopkins University and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Baker began his career as a newspaper reporter for The Baltimore Sun in 1947. He wrote a column for the paper for more than 30 years, and his work was syndicated in more than 200 newspapers. He also wrote for The New York Times Magazine and was a regular panelist on the television show "The News Quiz." Baker won the Pulitzer Prize for his 1982 autobiography Growing Up. He also wrote several other books, including The Good Times, Poor Russell's Almanac, and The Life and Times of the Late Great Johnny Apple. Baker was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2000. He died on January 21, 2019 at the age of 93.
