Ross J. Anderson is a British computer security expert and professor of security engineering at the University of Cambridge Computer Laboratory. He is best known for his work on security and privacy engineering, and for his book Security Engineering: A Guide to Building Dependable Distributed Systems. Anderson was born in 1956 in British. He received his B.A. in mathematics from Cambridge University in 1978 and his Ph.D. in computer science from the University of London in 1982. Anderson has been a professor of security engineering at the University of Cambridge since 1999. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society, a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, and a Fellow of the British Computer Society. He is also a member of the Advisory Council of the Foundation for Information Policy Research. Anderson has written several books on security engineering, including Security Engineering: A Guide to Building Dependable Distributed Systems, which has been translated into several languages. He has also written numerous articles on security engineering, cryptography, and computer security. Anderson has received numerous awards for his work, including the ACM SIGSAC Outstanding Contributions Award in 2006, the RSA Award for Excellence in the Field of Mathematics in 2007, and the IEEE Computer Society Technical Achievement Award in 2008.

Anderson was educated at the High School of Glasgow. In 1978, he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in mathematics and natural science from Trinity College, Cambridge, and subsequently received a qualification in computer engineering. Anderson worked in the avionics and banking industry before moving back to the University of Cambridge in 1992, to work on his doctorate under the supervision of Roger Needham and start his career as an academic researcher. He received his PhD in 1995, and became a lecturer in the same year.
