Roone Arledge was an American television sports and news producer, executive, and president of ABC Sports. He was the creator of Monday Night Football, Wide World of Sports, and ABC's Olympic coverage. He was also the first president of ABC News. Arledge was born in Forest Hills, New York, and attended Columbia University, where he was a member of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity. He began his career in television in 1954, working as a producer for CBS Sports. In 1960, he joined ABC Sports, where he created Monday Night Football and Wide World of Sports. He was also responsible for ABC's coverage of the Olympics, which he helped to expand and improve. In 1977, Arledge was named president of ABC News, a position he held until his retirement in 1998. During his tenure, he helped to create the newsmagazine 20/20 and the news program Nightline. He also oversaw the launch of the ABC News Digital Network. Arledge was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame in 1993. He died in 2002 at the age of 71.
