Ronnie Drew was an Irish singer, folk musician, and actor. He was a founding member of the popular Irish folk group The Dubliners, and was the lead singer on many of their most popular songs. He was born in Dublin, Ireland, on 16 September 1934. He began his career as a singer in the 1950s, and in 1962 he formed The Dubliners with Luke Kelly, Barney McKenna, Ciaran Bourke, and John Sheahan. The group went on to become one of the most successful Irish folk groups of all time, and Drew was the lead singer on many of their most popular songs, including "The Wild Rover," "The Black Velvet Band," and "Seven Drunken Nights." Drew was also an actor, appearing in films such as The Commitments and The Snapper. He was also a director, and directed the documentary film The Ballad of Ronnie Drew. Drew passed away on 16 August 2008, at the age of 73. He was survived by his wife, Deirdre, and their two children. He was posthumously inducted into the Irish Music Hall of Fame in 2009.
