Roger Allers is an American film director, screenwriter, and storyboard artist. He is best known for co-directing the Disney animated feature The Lion King (1994). He also wrote and directed the animated musical fantasy film The Little Matchgirl (2006). Allers was born in Rye, New York, and graduated from Rye High School in 1967. He studied at the School of Visual Arts in New York City and graduated from California Institute of the Arts in 1972. Allers began his career as an animator for Hanna-Barbera Productions in the 1970s. He then moved to Disney in 1981, where he worked as a storyboard artist on The Fox and the Hound (1981) and The Black Cauldron (1985). He was a story supervisor on Oliver & Company (1988) and The Little Mermaid (1989). Allers co-directed The Lion King with Rob Minkoff in 1994. The film was a critical and commercial success, becoming the highest-grossing film of the year and winning two Academy Awards. Allers also wrote the story for the film. Allers wrote and directed the animated musical fantasy film The Little Matchgirl (2006). The film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film. Allers has also worked as a storyboard artist on films such as The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996), Hercules (1997), and Mulan (1998). He was a story supervisor on Tarzan (1999) and a story consultant on Lilo & Stitch (2002). Allers has also worked as a voice actor, providing the voice of the King in The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea (2000). He also provided the voice of the King in the video game Kingdom Hearts II (2005). Allers has been married to his wife, Susan, since 1975. They have two children, a son and a daughter.
