Robert Stroud was an American criminal and prison inmate who became known as the "Birdman of Alcatraz" for his work in studying and raising birds while incarcerated. He was born on January 28, 1890 in Seattle, Washington. He was convicted of manslaughter in 1909 and sentenced to 12 years in prison. He was later transferred to Leavenworth Federal Penitentiary in Kansas, where he began studying birds and eventually became an expert on them. He was transferred to Alcatraz in 1942, where he continued his work with birds until his death in 1963. He wrote several books on birds and was the subject of two films, Birdman of Alcatraz (1962) and The Bird Doctor of Leavenworth (1966). He was also the subject of a documentary, The Birdman of Alcatraz (1962).
