Robert Benton is an American screenwriter, director, and producer. He is best known for writing and directing the films Kramer vs. Kramer (1979) and Places in the Heart (1984), both of which earned him Academy Awards for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay. He also wrote and directed the films Bonnie and Clyde (1967), Bad Company (1972), Still of the Night (1982), and Nobody's Fool (1994). Benton was born in Waxahachie, Texas, and attended the University of Texas at Austin, where he studied journalism and art. After graduating, he worked as a copywriter for an advertising agency in Dallas. He then moved to New York City, where he worked as a freelance writer for magazines and television. Benton's first screenplay was for the 1967 film Bonnie and Clyde, which he co-wrote with David Newman. The film was a critical and commercial success, and earned Benton an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay. He went on to write and direct the films Bad Company (1972), Kramer vs. Kramer (1979), and Places in the Heart (1984). He also wrote and directed the films Still of the Night (1982) and Nobody's Fool (1994). Benton has been nominated for four Academy Awards, winning two for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay for Kramer vs. Kramer.
