Robert Benchley was an American humorist, actor, and writer. He was best known for his contributions to The New Yorker magazine and his work in film and television. He was born in Worcester, Massachusetts, and attended Harvard University. After college, he worked as a reporter for the Worcester Telegram and then as a drama critic for the New York Tribune. Benchley began writing for The New Yorker in 1925 and quickly became one of the magazine's most popular contributors. He wrote humorous essays, short stories, and plays, and was also a regular contributor to the magazine's "Talk of the Town" section. He also wrote several books, including My Ten Years in a Quandary and How to Sleep. Benchley also appeared in several films, including The Little Giant (1933), The Cat and the Canary (1939), and The Ghost Breakers (1940). He also appeared in several television shows, including The Jack Benny Program and The George Burns and Gracie Allen Show. Benchley died in 1945 at the age of 55. He was posthumously inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame in 1981.
