Robert Beck was an American writer and author of several books, including the novel "The Man Who Fell from the Sky" and the non-fiction book "The Big Apple: New York in the Fifties". He was born in Chicago, Illinois, on August 4, 1918, and attended the University of Chicago. Beck began his career as a journalist, working for the Chicago Daily News and the Chicago Sun-Times. He later moved to New York City, where he wrote for the New York Post and the New York Herald Tribune. He also wrote for several magazines, including Esquire, Harper's, and The New Yorker. Beck's first novel, The Man Who Fell from the Sky, was published in 1954. It was followed by several other novels, including The Big Apple: New York in the Fifties (1956), The Last of the Conquerors (1958), and The Man Who Lived Twice (1960). He also wrote several books about the history of the American West, including The Wild West (1962) and The American West (1966). Beck died in New York City on April 15, 2002. He was 83 years old.
