Robert Alda was an American actor and director who had a successful career in film, television, and theater. He was best known for his role as George Gershwin in the 1945 biopic Rhapsody in Blue. He was also known for his roles in the films The Purple Heart, The Man with the Golden Arm, and The Godfather Part II. Alda was born in New York City on February 26, 1914. He was the son of Italian immigrants, and his father was a barber. Alda attended New York University and the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. Alda began his career in the theater, appearing in productions such as The Taming of the Shrew and The Petrified Forest. He made his film debut in the 1941 film The Purple Heart. He went on to appear in numerous films, including The Man with the Golden Arm, The Godfather Part II, and The Misfits. Alda was also active in television, appearing in shows such as The Phil Silvers Show, The Untouchables, and The Defenders. He won an Emmy Award for his performance in the television movie The Glass House. Alda was married to actress Flora Marino from 1941 until his death in 1986. They had three children. Alda died on May 3, 1986 in Los Angeles, California. He was 72 years old.
