Robert Abel is an American director, producer, and writer. He is best known for his work on the groundbreaking computer-animated film Tron (1982). He was born on March 10, 1937 in Cleveland, Ohio. Abel attended the University of Southern California, where he studied film and television production. After graduating, he worked as a production assistant on the television series The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (1964-1968). In the 1970s, Abel co-founded the computer animation company Robert Abel & Associates. The company produced commercials and short films, and was the first to use computer-generated imagery in a feature film. Abel's most famous work is Tron (1982), which was the first feature film to use computer animation. Abel won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Achievement in Special Visual Effects for his work on Tron. He also won a Clio Award for his work on the commercial "The Making of a Masterpiece" (1984). Abel's other credits include the feature films The Last Starfighter (1984) and The Lawnmower Man (1992). He also directed the television movie The Day After (1983). As of 2021, Robert Abel's net worth is estimated to be $2 million.
