Ritva Arvelo is a Finnish actress, writer, and director. She is best known for her roles in the films The Unknown Soldier (1955) and The White Reindeer (1952). She has also written and directed several films, including the award-winning The Year of the Hare (1977). Ritva Arvelo was born on 11 March 1921 in Helsinki, Finland. She studied at the University of Helsinki and the Helsinki Theatre Academy. She began her career as an actress in the 1940s, appearing in several films and television series. In the 1950s, she began writing and directing her own films. Her first feature film, The White Reindeer, won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival in 1952. She went on to write and direct several other films, including The Unknown Soldier (1955), The Year of the Hare (1977), and The Last Border (1980). Ritva Arvelo has won numerous awards for her work, including the Jussi Award for Best Director in 1977 and the Order of the Lion of Finland in 1981. She is also a member of the Finnish Film Academy.
