He has also released several solo albums, including his debut album, Rickey Brown, in 1982. Brown was born in Madison County, Mississippi, and grew up in a musical family. His father was a gospel singer and his mother was a piano teacher. He began playing the piano at the age of five and was soon performing with his father's gospel group. Brown attended the University of Mississippi, where he studied music and played in the school's jazz band. After graduating, he moved to Los Angeles and joined The Commodores. He wrote and produced several of the group's hits, including "Brick House" and "Easy." In 1982, Brown released his debut solo album, Rickey Brown. The album featured the hit single "I'm Ready," which reached number one on the R&B charts. He followed up with two more solo albums, Rickey Brown II and Rickey Brown III. In addition to his solo work, Brown has also produced and written songs for other artists, including Lionel Richie, Patti LaBelle, and The Temptations.
