Rick Bass is an American writer and environmental activist. He was born on March 7, 1958 in Fort Worth, Texas. He is best known for his short stories and novels about the American West. He has written over twenty books, including the novel The Diezmo, which won the PEN/Nelson Algren Award for Fiction in 1989. Bass attended the University of Arkansas, where he earned a B.A. in English in 1980. He then attended the University of Montana, where he earned an M.F.A. in creative writing in 1983. Bass has been a professor of creative writing at the University of Montana since 1988. He has also taught at the University of Texas at Austin, the University of Iowa, and the University of Wyoming. Bass is a member of the board of directors of the Greater Yellowstone Coalition, an environmental organization dedicated to protecting the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. He is also a member of the board of directors of the National Parks Conservation Association. Bass is married to the writer Elizabeth Hughes, and they have two children. He currently lives in Missoula, Montana.
