Richard Adams is an English novelist, best known for his 1972 novel Watership Down. He was born on 9 May 1920 in Wash Common, near Newbury, Berkshire, England, the son of Evelyn Mary (née Hooper) and George Beadon Adams. He was educated at Bradfield College and at Worcester College, Oxford, where he read modern history. Adams served in the British Army during World War II, and was a part of the D-Day landings. After the war, he worked for the British Civil Service. Adams began writing in the late 1960s, and his first novel, Watership Down, was published in 1972. The novel was an immediate success, and has since been adapted into an animated film, a television series, and a video game. Adams has written several other novels, including Shardik (1974), The Plague Dogs (1977), The Girl in a Swing (1980), Maia (1984), and Traveller (1988). He has also written several non-fiction books, including The Day Gone By (1989) and Nature Through the Seasons (1993). Adams was awarded an OBE in the New Year Honours of 2001. He died on 24 December 2016, at the age of 96. As of 2021, Richard Adams's net worth is estimated to be around $10 million.
