Reginald Barker was a Canadian-born film director, writer, and producer. He is best known for his work in the silent film era, directing over 50 films between 1913 and 1925. He was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada on April 2, 1886. Barker began his career in the film industry in 1912, working as an assistant director for the American film company Kalem. He quickly rose through the ranks and began directing his own films in 1913. He directed a variety of genres, including westerns, comedies, and dramas. His most successful films were the westerns he directed for the Jesse L. Lasky Feature Play Company, which included The Great Train Robbery (1914) and The Spoilers (1914). Barker's career came to an abrupt end in 1925 when he was accused of embezzlement and fraud. He was found guilty and sentenced to five years in prison. After his release, he returned to Canada and worked as a carpenter. He died in Vancouver, British Columbia in 1945. Reginald Barker's net worth is estimated to be around $1 million.

He worked steadily for Ince, and was so highly thought of by the producer that he shared director duties with Barker on Ince's epic, Civilization (1915). Barker directed almost 100 films over his career, working with such stars as Sessue Hayakawa, Hoot Gibson and Myrna Loy.

1910

Canadian-born (Winnipeg) Reginald Barker moved with his family to Scotland shortly after he was born, and they eventually emigrated to the US, settling in California. Bitten by the show-business bug early, Barker was acting in plays by age 16, and then joined up with a traveling stock company as stage manager. He eventually made his way to New York City, where he got a job as a stage manager and, starting in 1910, as an actor. He found that the burgeoning motion picture business proved more interesting to him than the stage, and he joined Bison Pictures, traveling to California and working under legendary producer Thomas H. Ince.

1902

On the stage as actor and producer from 1902, Barker was a pioneer silent film director of westerns and outdoor action films. In 1912 he joined Bison Motion Pictures, under the auspices of Thomas H. Ince. After leaving the industry in 1945, Barker and his wife ran a gift shop in Pasadena.
