Red Adair was an American oil well firefighter and entrepreneur who became famous for his daring and successful efforts to extinguish some of the world's most dangerous oil well fires. He was born on June 18, 1915 in Houston, Texas, and grew up in the oil fields of Texas and Oklahoma. He began his career as a roughneck in the oil fields of Texas and Oklahoma, and eventually became a firefighter for the Texas Company (later Texaco). He was known for his daring and successful efforts to extinguish some of the world's most dangerous oil well fires. He was also known for his colorful personality and his trademark red hard hat. He was the subject of the 1968 film Hellfighters, starring John Wayne. He died on August 7, 2004 at the age of 89.

2000

Is credited with battling more than 2000 land and offshore oil well fires and was instrumental in capping Kuwaiti oil wells set ablaze by Iraqi soldiers. His death-defying feats included battling the July 1988 explosion of the Piper Alpha platform that killed 167 men in the stormy North Sea off the coast of Scotland.
