Ray Ratto is a sports journalist and columnist who was born in 1954. He is best known for his work as a columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle and ESPN. He has also written for the San Jose Mercury News, the Oakland Tribune, and the San Francisco Examiner. Ratto attended the University of California, Berkeley, where he earned a degree in English. He began his career as a sports writer for the San Francisco Examiner in 1979. He then moved to the San Jose Mercury News in 1984, where he wrote a column for the paper until 1997. Ratto joined the San Francisco Chronicle in 1997, where he wrote a column for the paper until 2009. He then moved to ESPN, where he wrote for the website until 2014. Ratto is currently a columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle and a contributor to the San Francisco Giants' website. He is also a frequent guest on KNBR radio in San Francisco. Ratto has won numerous awards for his work, including the Associated Press Sports Editors Award for Column Writing in 2003 and the National Headliner Award for Sports Column Writing in 2004. Ray Ratto (born 1954) has been a San Francisco Bay Area sportswriter since the 1970s and a sports columnist since the 1980s. A lifelong resident of Alameda, California, he was a Senior Insider for the TV station NBC Sports Bay Area (formerly Comcast Sportsnet Bay Area) from 2010 to 2019, and wrote columns for their website. He has also written national columns for espn.com as well as CBS' sportsline.com. Beginning his column-writing career for two now-defunct newspapers, The National and the Peninsula Times Tribune, Ratto later became a staff writer then a columnist for the San Francisco Examiner and then the San Francisco Chronicle before moving to TV. He has also co-hosted radio shows on both KNBR and KGMZ-FM. Ratto was a regular on the NBC Sports Bay Area show "The Happy Hour" before his termination from NBCSBA in late 2018. In 2019 he was a contributor at Deadspin and wrote columns for the San Jose Mercury News. Ratto is one of 60 sportswriters whose ranking of college football teams makes up the AP Poll. Ratto currently is employed by KMGZ-FM, better known as 95.7 The Game, and is part of the 2-6pm Monday thru Friday program Damon Ratto and Kolsky with Damon Bruce and Matt Kolsky.
