Randy Johnston is an American jazz guitarist and composer. He has released over 20 albums as a leader and has performed with many of the top jazz musicians in the world. He has been a member of the Jazz Messengers, the Mingus Big Band, and the Dizzy Gillespie Alumni All-Stars. Johnston was born in Detroit, Michigan, and began playing guitar at the age of 12. He attended the University of Michigan, where he studied music theory and composition. After graduating, he moved to New York City and began performing with jazz greats such as Dizzy Gillespie, Art Blakey, and Charles Mingus. Johnston has released over 20 albums as a leader, including the Grammy-nominated albums "Blue Randy" and "Hit and Run". He has also performed on numerous albums by other artists, including the Grammy-winning "Mingus Big Band Live at the Jazz Standard". Johnston has toured extensively throughout the United States, Europe, and Japan. He has also performed at many of the world's most prestigious jazz festivals, including the Montreux Jazz Festival, the North Sea Jazz Festival, and the Newport Jazz Festival. Johnston is currently based in New York City, where he continues to perform and record. He is also a professor at the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music.
