Ram Dass is an American spiritual teacher, psychologist, and author. He is best known for his book Be Here Now, which became an iconic spiritual classic in the 1970s. He is also known for his work with psychedelic drugs, particularly LSD and psilocybin. Ram Dass was born Richard Alpert in Boston, Massachusetts, to a Jewish family. He attended Tufts University and Harvard University, where he earned a Ph.D. in psychology. He was a professor at Harvard until he was fired in 1963 for giving psilocybin to an undergraduate student. In 1967, Ram Dass traveled to India, where he met his guru, Neem Karoli Baba. He changed his name to Ram Dass, which means "servant of God." He returned to the United States and began teaching and writing about his spiritual experiences. Ram Dass has written several books, including Be Here Now, The Only Dance There Is, and Grist for the Mill. He has also lectured extensively and appeared in several films and television shows.
