In 1991, Nishonov was elected as the first President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, a position he held until 1992. During his tenure, he oversaw the transition of the country from a Soviet republic to an independent nation. He also implemented a number of economic reforms, including the privatization of state-owned enterprises. Nishonov is currently retired from politics and is living in Tashkent.
