Poul Anderson was an American science fiction and fantasy author who wrote over 100 novels and short stories. He was a three-time winner of the Hugo Award and a seven-time winner of the Nebula Award. He was also a recipient of the Gandalf Grand Master Award and the SFWA Grand Master Award. Anderson was born in Bristol, Pennsylvania, and grew up in the nearby town of Oradell, New Jersey. He attended the University of Minnesota, where he earned a degree in physics. After college, he worked as a technical writer for the Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company (3M). Anderson began writing science fiction in the 1950s, and his first novel, Brain Wave, was published in 1954. He went on to write over 100 novels and short stories, many of which were set in the future or in alternate universes. His works often featured strong female characters and explored themes of morality and ethics. Anderson was married twice, first to Karen Kruse in 1953 and then to Karen Anderson in 1971. He had three children with his first wife and two with his second. He died in 2001 at the age of 74.
