Philip Gossett is an American musicologist and scholar of Italian opera. He is the Robert W. Reneker Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus of Music at the University of Chicago. He is best known for his work on the operas of Giuseppe Verdi, and for his editorial work on the critical editions of Verdi's works. He has also written extensively on the music of Rossini, Donizetti, and Bellini. Gossett was born in New York City in 1941. He received his bachelor's degree from Harvard University in 1962 and his Ph.D. from Princeton University in 1967. He taught at the University of Chicago from 1967 to 2006. Gossett has received numerous awards and honors for his work, including the Premio Abbiati from the Italian Music Critics Association, the Dent Medal from the Royal Musical Association, and the Premio Verdi from the Fondazione Giuseppe Verdi. He was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2002. Gossett's net worth is not publicly available.
