Philip Berrigan was an American peace activist and Roman Catholic priest. He was a leader of the Plowshares Movement, an anti-nuclear protest group, and was arrested numerous times for acts of civil disobedience. He was also a poet, author, and teacher. Berrigan was born in Two Harbors, Minnesota, the son of a railroad worker. He attended St. John's University in Collegeville, Minnesota, and was ordained a Josephite priest in 1955. He served as a chaplain in the U.S. Air Force from 1956 to 1957. Berrigan became a leader of the Catholic Left in the 1960s, and was a vocal opponent of the Vietnam War. He was arrested numerous times for acts of civil disobedience, including the Catonsville Nine action in 1968, in which he and eight other activists burned draft records with homemade napalm. Berrigan was also a leader of the Plowshares Movement, an anti-nuclear protest group. He was arrested numerous times for acts of civil disobedience, including the 1980 Plowshares action in which he and seven other activists hammered on nuclear missile nose cones and poured blood on documents at a General Electric nuclear missile facility in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania. Berrigan was the author of several books, including The Trial of the Catonsville Nine (1972), Prison Journals of a Priest Revolutionary (1973), and Fighting the Lamb's War (2002). He was also a poet, and his work was published in several collections, including To Dwell in Peace (1987) and The Long Loneliness (1993). Berrigan died in Baltimore, Maryland, on December 6, 2002, at the age of 79.

A former Roman Catholic priest who staged one of the most dramatic anti-war protests of the 1960s and was arrested at least 100 times, serving a total of 11 years in prison for his anti-war and anti-nuclear activities. He may be most famous for leading the "Catonsville 9", a group that doused a small bonfire of draft records in homemade napalm at a parking lot on May 17, 1968. Berrigan's brother, the Rev. Daniel Berrigan, was a member of the group who wrote The Trial of the Catonsville Nine, a Broadway play in 1971 that was later made into a movie.
