Philip Ahn was an American actor of Korean descent. He was best known for his roles in films such as The Good Earth (1937), The General Died at Dawn (1936), and The Manchurian Candidate (1962). He was the first Asian-American actor to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Ahn was born in Highland Park, Los Angeles, California, the son of Korean immigrants. He attended the University of Southern California, where he studied pre-law. He later changed his major to drama and graduated in 1929. Ahn began his acting career in the early 1930s, appearing in small roles in films such as The Good Earth (1937) and The General Died at Dawn (1936). He also appeared in television shows such as The Lone Ranger and Bonanza. Ahn was also active in the Korean-American community, serving as the president of the Korean National Association and the Korean American League. He was also a founding member of the Korean American Coalition. Ahn died on February 28, 1978, in Los Angeles, California, at the age of 72. He was posthumously awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1985.
