Pete Fountain is an American jazz clarinetist and bandleader. He is best known for his Dixieland jazz style and his long-running association with the Lawrence Welk Show. He has released over 50 albums and has been featured in numerous television and film appearances. Fountain was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, and began playing the clarinet at the age of six. He was influenced by the music of Louis Armstrong, Sidney Bechet, and other jazz greats. He attended the New Orleans Conservatory of Music and began performing professionally at the age of 15. In the 1950s, Fountain became a regular on the Lawrence Welk Show, where he performed with his own band, the Basin Street Six. He also appeared on the show as a soloist. He left the show in 1967 and went on to perform with other jazz greats, including Dizzy Gillespie, Count Basie, and Ella Fitzgerald. Fountain has released over 50 albums, including his most recent, Pete Fountain's New Orleans (2015). He has also appeared in numerous television and film appearances, including The Godfather Part II (1974), The Blues Brothers (1980), and The Simpsons (1989). Fountain has been honored with numerous awards, including a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004. He was inducted into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame in 2006.
