Patrick O'Brian was an English novelist and translator, best known for his Aubrey–Maturin series of novels set in the Royal Navy during the Napoleonic Wars. He wrote a total of 20 novels in the series, along with several short stories and other works. O'Brian was born in Chalfont St. Peter, Buckinghamshire, England, on 12 December 1914. He was educated at home by his mother until the age of nine, when he was sent to a preparatory school. He then attended the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, and served in the Royal Navy during World War II. After the war, O'Brian worked as a translator and wrote his first novel, Testimonies, in 1952. His first Aubrey–Maturin novel, Master and Commander, was published in 1969. The series was a critical and commercial success, and O'Brian went on to write 19 more novels in the series. O'Brian was awarded the Heywood Hill Literary Prize in 1993 and was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2000. He died in Dublin, Ireland, on 2 January 2000.
