Patrick Macnee was an English actor best known for his role as the secret agent John Steed in the British television series The Avengers. He was born on 6 February 1922 in Paddington, London, England, UK. Macnee began his career as a child actor in the 1930s, appearing in films such as The Three Musketeers (1939) and The Thief of Bagdad (1940). He later served in the Royal Navy during World War II. After the war, he returned to acting and appeared in numerous British television series, including The Adventures of Robin Hood (1955–1960) and The Saint (1962–1969). In 1961, Macnee was cast as John Steed in The Avengers, a role he would play for the next seven years. The series was a huge success and made Macnee a household name. After The Avengers ended in 1969, Macnee continued to act in films and television, including roles in The New Avengers (1976–1977) and The Return of the Man from U.N.C.L.E. (1983). Macnee was married twice and had two children. He died on 25 June 2015 at the age of 93.

As his father (Daniel Macnee), a race horse trainer, had drank and gambled the family's money away, his mother (Dorothea Mary, nee Henry; died November 29, 1984) took young Patrick to live with her female lover, Evelyn, in a huge mansion in southern England, where he wore kilts until the age of 11. He was encouraged to call his mother's partner, who paid for his schooling through Eton, as "Uncle Evelyn".

For many years he smoked 80 cigarettes a day and drank a bottle of Scotch whisky every night. He was forced to give up drinking after being diagnosed with liver disease in the mid-1980s.

His close identification with this character limited his career choices after the cancellation of the series in 1969, prompting him to reprise the role in The New Avengers (1976), which, though popular, failed to recapture the magic of the original series.
