He attended the City College of New York and graduated with a degree in cinematography. He began his career as a camera assistant in the 1950s and worked his way up to become a cinematographer. Roizman has worked on over 50 films and television shows throughout his career. He has been nominated for five Academy Awards for Best Cinematography for The Exorcist (1973), The French Connection (1971), Network (1976), Tootsie (1982), and The River (1984).
