Oscar Straus was a composer, conductor, and writer of operettas and film scores. He was born in Vienna, Austria-Hungary, and studied at the Vienna Conservatory. He wrote over 50 operettas, including The Chocolate Soldier (1908), Ein Walzertraum (1907), and The Gypsy Baron (1909). He also wrote the music for the film The Blue Angel (1930). Straus was a prolific composer, writing over 500 works, including operas, operettas, ballets, symphonies, chamber music, and songs. He was also a conductor and wrote several books on music theory. Straus was awarded the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art in 1929 and the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1956. He died in Vienna in 1954.
