Stedje began his career in the early 1970s, playing in various local bands. In 1979, he released his first solo album, Olav Stedje, which was followed by a string of successful albums throughout the 1980s and 1990s. He has released a total of 15 albums, and has won several awards, including the Norwegian Grammy for Best Male Artist in 1985. Stedje has also been involved in various humanitarian causes, including the Norwegian Red Cross and the Norwegian Refugee Council.
