NoViolet Bulawayo is a Zimbabwean author and professor of creative writing. She is best known for her debut novel We Need New Names, which won the 2013 Hemingway Foundation/PEN Award and was shortlisted for the 2013 Man Booker Prize. NoViolet was born in Tsholotsho, Zimbabwe, and grew up in the city of Bulawayo. She attended the University of Zimbabwe, where she earned a degree in English and Communication Studies. She then moved to the United States to pursue a master's degree in Creative Writing at Cornell University. NoViolet's debut novel, We Need New Names, was published in 2013. The novel follows the story of a young girl, Darling, who is forced to flee her home in Zimbabwe and seek refuge in the United States. The novel was widely praised and won the 2013 Hemingway Foundation/PEN Award and was shortlisted for the 2013 Man Booker Prize. NoViolet is currently a professor of creative writing at Stanford University. She is also the author of the short story collection, What It Means When a Man Falls from the Sky, which was published in 2017.
