He had two sons and a daughter. His eldest son, John, enlisted in the British Royal Navy and joined the Royal Fleet Auxiliary and died in 1975 from a fall.

In 1964, he was appointed the position of Deputy Chief of the Defense Staff for Intelligence. He retired from the Royal Navy in 1967.

1963

He was awarded the Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the 1963 Queen's New Years Honours List for his services to the military. He was also awarded the Companion of the Order of Bath in the 1961 Queen's New Years Honours List for his services to the military.

1956

After World War II, he was appointed the position of Director of Planning for the Admiralty. He was appointed the position of director of the Royal Naval College in Greenwich in 1956 and was appointed the position of deputy chief of naval personnel in 1958. In 1959, he was appointed the position of director of manpower and in 1960, he was appointed the position of the Director of the Naval Intelligence Division.
