Norman Bridwell is an American author and illustrator best known for his series of children's books about Clifford the Big Red Dog. He was born on February 15, 1928 in Kokomo, Indiana. Bridwell attended the Art Institute of Chicago and the University of Cincinnati. He began his career as a freelance illustrator, working for magazines such as The Saturday Evening Post and Collier's. In 1963, Bridwell wrote and illustrated his first book, Clifford the Big Red Dog. The book was an instant success and was followed by more than 30 Clifford books. Bridwell also wrote and illustrated several other books, including The Witch Next Door, Emily's Runaway Imagination, and The Magic Puppy. Bridwell has received numerous awards for his work, including the Children's Book Council's Children's Choice Award and the National Cartoonists Society's Reuben Award.
