Norbert Walter-Borjans is a German economist and politician who has served as Minister of Finance of North Rhine-Westphalia since 2017. He was born on 17 September 1952 in Krefeld, Germany. He studied economics at the University of Cologne and the University of Bonn, and received his doctorate in economics in 1983. Walter-Borjans began his career in the public sector in 1983, working as a research assistant at the Institute for Economic Research in Cologne. He then worked as a research assistant at the Institute for Economic Policy at the University of Bonn from 1984 to 1986. From 1986 to 1989, he was a research assistant at the Institute for Economic Policy at the University of Cologne. In 1989, Walter-Borjans was appointed as a professor of economics at the University of Duisburg-Essen. He held this position until 2017, when he was appointed as Minister of Finance of North Rhine-Westphalia. Walter-Borjans is a member of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD). He has been a member of the SPD since 1975 and has held various positions in the party, including as a member of the SPD's executive board from 2009 to 2017.
