Nina Bawden was an English novelist and children's writer. She was born on 19 January 1925 in Ilford, Essex, England, UK. She was educated at Ilford County High School for Girls and St Anne's College, Oxford. Bawden wrote more than 40 books for adults and children, including Carrie's War, which won the 1973 Carnegie Medal. She was also a recipient of the Guardian Children's Fiction Prize and the Whitbread Award. Bawden was married twice, first to the journalist and author George H. Bawden, and then to the journalist and author Austin Mitchell. She had two children, a son and a daughter. Bawden died on 22 August 2012, aged 87, in London, England.
