He started his career as a player in the Romanian Liga I with FC Dinamo București in 1972. He went on to play for several other clubs in Romania, including FC Universitatea Craiova, FC Olt Scornicești, FC Farul Constanța, FCM Bacău, and FCM Reșița. Manea also had a successful international career, representing Romania at the 1982 FIFA World Cup and the 1984 UEFA European Championship. He also played for the Romanian national team in the 1986 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Manea retired from playing in 1989 and began his managerial career in 1990. He has managed several clubs in Romania, including FCM Bacău, FCM Reșița, FC Farul Constanța, FC Universitatea Craiova, and FC Olt Scornicești. He has also managed clubs in other countries, including FC Dinamo București in Romania, FC Dinamo Tbilisi in Georgia, and FC Sheriff Tiraspol in Moldova.
