He moved to France in the 1960s and worked on several films, including François Truffaut's The 400 Blows and Jules et Jim. He also worked with directors such as Luis Buñuel, Robert Bresson, and Wim Wenders. In the 1970s, Almendros moved to the United States and worked on several films, including Days of Heaven, which earned him an Academy Award for Best Cinematography. He also worked on films such as Sophie's Choice, The Blue Lagoon, and The Natural. In the 1980s, Almendros returned to Spain and worked on several films, including El Sur and La Noche de los Girasoles. He also worked on films such as The Unbearable Lightness of Being and The Mission. Almendros was awarded the American Society of Cinematographers Lifetime Achievement Award in 1998.
