Neil Oatley is a British car designer and engineer who has worked in the automotive industry for over 40 years. He is best known for his work on the McLaren F1, the world's first production car to use a carbon fibre monocoque chassis. Oatley was born in Camberwell, London, and attended the Royal College of Art in London, where he studied vehicle design. After graduating, he joined the Ford Motor Company in 1977, where he worked on the design of the Ford Escort and the Ford Sierra. In 1989, Oatley joined McLaren Automotive, where he was responsible for the design of the McLaren F1. The F1 was the world's first production car to use a carbon fibre monocoque chassis, and it was also the first production car to use a central driving position. The F1 was a huge success, and it is still considered one of the greatest supercars ever made. Oatley has also worked on the design of the McLaren P1, the McLaren MP4-12C, and the McLaren 650S. He is currently the Design Director at McLaren Automotive. Oatley has been awarded the Royal Designer for Industry award, and he was also inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame in 2018. He is married to his wife, and they have two children.
