Nathan Milstein was a Russian-born violinist and composer who is widely regarded as one of the greatest violinists of the 20th century. He was born on December 31, 1904 in Odessa, Kherson Governorate, Russian Empire (now Ukraine). Milstein began studying the violin at the age of five and made his debut at the age of nine. He studied at the Odessa Conservatory and the Moscow Conservatory, where he was a student of Leopold Auer. He made his debut in Berlin in 1923 and soon became one of the most sought-after violinists in Europe. Milstein was known for his passionate and intense performances, as well as his technical mastery. He was also known for his interpretations of the works of Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, and Tchaikovsky. He was a frequent collaborator with the pianist Vladimir Horowitz and the cellist Gregor Piatigorsky. Milstein was a professor at the Juilliard School from 1965 to 1972 and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1987. He died in 1992 in London, England.
