She is best known for her work on the television series The Beachcombers, which aired from 1972 to 1990. Kovitz began her career in the 1950s as a production assistant and assistant director on various television series. She then moved on to directing and producing her own projects, including the television series The Beachcombers, which she produced from 1972 to 1990. Kovitz has also directed several feature films, including The Grey Fox (1982), which was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture. She has also directed the television movies The Return of the Shaggy Dog (1987) and The Christmas Gift (1986). Kovitz has been honored with several awards, including the Order of Canada in 2002 and the Governor General's Performing Arts Award in 2004. She was the first female to hold the position. Other involvement at the University of Calgary included a member of the Senate (1970) and Chairman of the Senate Executive Committee, a member of the Board of Governors (1972) and a member of the Board of Governors Executive Committee, all prior to being elected as Chancellor. She is a Chancellor Emeritus of the University of Calgary.
