He was a prolific writer, having authored over 50 books and numerous articles on Islamic law, theology, and philosophy. Zarqtuni was educated in traditional Islamic studies, and received his doctorate in Islamic law from the University of Al-Azhar in Cairo, Egypt. He was a professor of Islamic law at the University of Rabat in Morocco, and was a visiting professor at the University of Michigan in the United States. Zarqtuni was a strong advocate of Islamic reform, and was a vocal critic of the traditional Islamic legal system. He argued for the need to modernize Islamic law and to make it more accessible to the general public. He was also a proponent of the use of reason and logic in Islamic jurisprudence. Zarqtuni died in 2004 at the age of 77. He is remembered as one of the most influential Islamic scholars of the 20th century, and his works continue to be studied and discussed by Islamic scholars today.
