Milton Rosen was an American composer and music department head. He was born in Yonkers, New York, and attended the Juilliard School of Music. He began his career as a composer in the 1930s, writing music for films such as The Great Ziegfeld (1936) and The Wizard of Oz (1939). He also wrote music for television shows such as The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet (1952-1966) and The Monkees (1966-1968). Rosen was the head of the music department at Universal Studios from the 1950s to the 1970s. During this time, he wrote music for many of the studio's films, including The Birds (1963), The Sting (1973), and Jaws (1975). He also wrote the theme song for the television show The Munsters (1964-1966). Rosen was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song for the song "The Ballad of Davy Crockett" from the 1955 film Davy Crockett, King of the Wild Frontier. He was also nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Arrangement for the song "The Monkees Theme" from the 1966 television show The Monkees. Rosen died on April 15, 1995 in Los Angeles, California.

Rosen remained under contract with Universal (except for a brief stint at Fox in 1948), from 1943 until 1973. During his tenure, he wrote more than 150 songs and contributed, either as arranger, conductor or musical supervisor to dozens of the studio's often colourful, escapist extravaganzas.

1939

In 1939, he joined the music department at Universal and became a member of ASCAP two years later.

1930

Milton Rosen played the violin from an early age and was later trained in orchestration and composition at the Institute of Musical Art in New York, where he worked with Italian composer Pietro Floridia and the Russian emigre conductor Vladimir Bakaleinikoff. He composed several classical pieces (including "A Columnist Suite for Violin & Piano") during the 1930's, which were widely performed by notable symphony orchestras in Boston, Pittsburgh, Cincinatti, and at the Hollywood Bowl. Rosen also worked in radio and musical theatre, primarily as orchestrator and arranger.
